The Music Workshop

A dive into the mechanics of music, revealing the ways that it touches our emotions, and the craft of composers who use it to tell stories.

These fun, engaging talks will look at examples of music from across the centuries, examining how composers use a palette of techniques to draw the listener in, and guide them through the stories they want to tell. We’ll touch on bits of theory, and bits of history, but fear not, these talks are open to all, and no previous knowledge of music is required at all, just a curiosity to know more! Music is for everyone, and these talks are designed to open up a new appreciation for the host of musical styles and genres out there.

The talks are 1 hour in length, and will be followed by Q&A and discussion.

Harry Winstanley began his professional career in Hong Kong, and is now a busy freelance player based in London, invited to play guest principal flute with major orchestras at home and abroad, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia, Academy of St Martin in the Fields, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, London Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and is the principal flute of the English Chamber Orchestra. He is often seen and heard on radio and television broadcasts and film soundtracks, and has recorded and performed with a wide range of artists, from Joshua Bell and José Carreras to the Pet Shop Boys, Rufus Wainwright and Rod Stewart.
As well as his work as a flute player, Harry is an award-winning composer, writing music for film. Harry’s inspirations are hugely eclectic, describing himself as a musical magpie, and he brings his influences from Bach to Ravel, Moondog to Snarky Puppy.

Harry studied Music at the University of Cambridge, from which he was awarded a first-class degree, and the Royal Academy of Music, from which he graduated with distinction. Harry is an associate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, UK.
