Conversation with Mark Anthony-Turnage with Jon Carnac + Junyan Chen

Mark-Anthony Turnage is one of the most admired and widely-performed composers of his generation. His works skilfully blend classical and jazz idioms, modernism and tradition. He has composed under residencies/associations with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, English National Opera, BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Jon Carnac has played principal clarinet with all of London’s major symphony orchestras, and has travelled the world and recorded with conductors including Sir Georg Solti, Bernard Haitink and Sir Simon Rattle. Jon’s playing has been featured on over 100 Film Soundtracks including scores by John Williams, James Horner, Hans Zimmer and Jerry Goldsmith. He has also appeared on albums with Sting, Peter Gabriel, Mark Knopfler, Gregory Porter, Robbie Williams and Stevie Wonder. In 2021 Jon gave the world première of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Clarinet Concertino. Junyan Chen’s recent concerto engagements include the Ravel G major with the Brighton Philharmonic and Rachmaninov 4 with Edward Gardner and the RAM Symphony Orchestra. She recently worked closely with Hans Abrahamsen for a performance of his piano concerto with conductor Franck Ollu and the Manson Ensemble. Entrance: The event is taking place in The Green Room of The Grand – a magnificent building that offers a number of entrances, some of which are trickier to find. Echoes of winter tunes known throughout the western world, mix with the traditional and the newly written, all passed with great care and love through The Unthanks filter. The heartwarming pathos and glacial majesty present in their music to date makes a winter concert a mouth-watering prospect. The Unthanks are the perfect band to bring us an abstract new work capturing the magic and wonder of the turn of the year; the end and beginning of the circle of life. Disco Departures with DJ Jamie Bennett

Jamie Bennett’s Disco Departures promises a rhythmic journey through time and space. Setting off at 8pm, moving through the early 1900s taking in Rumba, Calypso, Reggae and Latin. From 9-10pm we’ll navigate through the sounds of Jazz, Soul, Funk and Psychedelic before grooving into the disco era. From there we’ll dance through Post-Disco, into House, and its many sub-genres, arriving back in 2023 by 1am. With percussion from “Sookers” adding a live element, you won’t want to miss a beat. Get ready for a night of pulsating rhythms and infectious grooves!

Festive Fun @ Home – Raising Money for Parkinson’s UK

Don’t have a ‘Blue Christmas’, but paint the town a festive red instead, as you ‘step Into Christmas’ with an evening of music and poetry, featuring original work and festive favourites from some fantastic artists – Including Karolvs Rex, Chloe, Megan Wardroper, Elevator Duo, Angel Dee and Phil Welton. All in aid of Parkinson’s UK – who fund research into Parkinson’s treatment and provide help and support for patients and their families. It’ll be ‘Lonely This Christmas’ if you’re not there! But if you can’t make it there is an online JustGiving campaign for you to contribute.
