What is a Music Town?

Overview

A “Music Town” is a community that has formally recognized music as a valuable asset, aiming to boost economic growth, tourism, and well-being, often through initiatives like supporting local musicians and venues, and fostering a vibrant music scene.

A Music Town is a place that actively embraces music as a core part of its identity and culture, not just as entertainment.

Key Characteristics of a music town:
  • Vibrant Music Scene: Music Towns boast a dynamic live music scene with a mix of genres and support for both local and international artists at various venues.
  • Economic Impact: Music serves as an economic catalyst by attracting tourists, generating jobs, and enhancing local commerce.
  • Social Cohesion: Music promotes community unity and connects people of different ages and cultures.
  • Infrastructure and Support: Music Towns provide essential resources like music education, rehearsal spaces, and recording studios to nurture the music industry.
  • Collaboration: These towns foster cooperation among musicians, venues, businesses, and community groups to advance their music scene.

Folkestone was presented as a case study at the United Nations Habitat World Urban Forum in 2018 after many community meetings and events with people coming together across music venuesbandsmusicians and industry leaders. This culminated in BBC coverage on BBC Music Day and led us to official recognition as The World’s First Music Town!

Folkestone, a vibrant town on England’s south coast, has a deep-rooted musical heritage. For centuries, music has been at the heart of its community.

The Victorians built magnificent venues to celebrate it, King Edward VII introduced Europe’s first sprung dance floor at The Grand Hotel, and soldiers departing for war enjoyed their last tea and cake to its melodies. Local talent has long composed and performed here, contributing to Folkestone’s rich musical legacy.

Over the years, the town has attracted pioneering musicians, from Yehudi Menuhin to Jimi Hendrix.

Inspired by the global Music City movement, Folkestone has embraced the same approach as renowned music hubs like London, Nashville, Austin, and New Orleans.

By formally recognizing music as a valuable asset, Folkestone acknowledges its role in driving economic growth, enhancing health and well-being, and supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals—making history as the first town in the world to do so.

Folkestone was officially declared “The World’s First Music Town” on BBC Music Day, 26th September 2019—an annual celebration of music’s power to transform lives.

It’s no secret that one of Folkestone’s own made it into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Noel Redding left home in 1966 to join Jimi Hendrix and Mitch Mitchell, forming one of the most iconic and influential bands in modern music history—the legendary Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Yep, that's The Rolling Stones!

Five decades on, Folkestone remains a powerhouse of musical talent across all ages. The local scene is thriving, embracing everything from hip-hop to ska, string quartets to dj sets and every genre in-between.

Folkestone is a town that welcomes musicians. Whether you’re an artist, producer, promoter, venue or fan, there’s a place for you in our vibrant community. With recording studios, rehearsal spaces, music teachers, choirs, collaborators, and passionate local venues, inspiration is never far away.

Folkestone’s musical offering continues to stay strong as the operators in the scene continue to collaborate with each other and provide a variety of musical entertainment and education.

Come be a part of it!
