This talk will consider several composers who have contributed to the repertoire of music for left-hand-only piano, both from the Classical and Jazz/Improv areas, and examine why it is important for not only pianists, but also music education and creativity. To accompany his talk, Mitchell will include historic video and audio recordings, perform some of his original LH-only piano music and other examples. His 2013 release ‘The Glimpse’ (Whirlwind Recordings) was a widely acclaimed unique album of LH only piano improvisation, originals and music by Fred Hersch and Federico Mompou. Do not miss this all too neglected but incredibly fertile area of piano creativity. (Doors 7:30pm)
