*Folkestone Music Town: The End-of-Year Open Space
*Time to reflect and to share new ideas…
Our beloved Chambers is closing. Rather than this being simply a ‘blow’ to the town – which of course it is – let’s use this moment to imagine the future for music here and to plan optimistically.
There is an African proverb which says: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
So Folkestone Music Town CIC (FMT) is going to host a special event – an Open Space open to all. It’s called an ‘open space’ because the agenda at it isn’t being set by FMT or any one person but by everyone who comes to the event.
It works best when there is a mix of people from different backgrounds in the room: music people, yes, but also the Council, the visual arts community, businesses, the social services workers and so on – all focused on how music change help to make Folkestone better. This is the mission of Folkestone Music Town!
‘Open Spaces’ are also about bringing together people who want to address a complex issue, by focusing on what matters to them, by making essential connections, and doing what they think must be done. It’s about shared responsibility, shared solutions and helping ordinary people achieve extraordinary things together.
*So what’s going to happen?
*We are inviting you to come along to The Chambers – first for a celebration of the venue – and second to discuss any burning issues you have related to music locally. You’ll post a topic on the wall, it will get timetabled, the agenda for the event will come together, and over the course of the event people will join the conversations that ‘speaks to them’ the loudest. It’s people power in action.
At any one time, there might be 4, 5, or even more, breakout conversations going on at the same time. You can change your table at any time and join a different discussion. The discussion will be written up by a nominated person and everyone who attended will get a copy of all the discussions (anonymised!) if they give us their email address. (And we will share the participants names and email addresses if the agree to this.)
Then, at the end of the event, everyone comes together again, to share their reflections, learning and the actions they want to commit to. It will all take an hour and we will fit in 2 x 25 minute conversation rounds.
